Thin crust pizza were a craze sometime back like the wood fire pizza offering right now. Over the last monsoon filled weekend in Bangalore, I along with 4 more friends visited a pizza place named Pizza Stop. It is an eating outlet in the housing area of JP Nagar 4th Phase near Delmia Circle (next to MK Ahmed supermarket).

A fairly hidden place with not much promotional activities. It is a house converted into hotel cum pizza offering with about 5 tables available inside and out in the open. The open area is covered to take care of monsoon season.

Our order began with a couple of varieties of Garlic breads. We had planned of trying out this place and heading out to Dominoes outlet very close incase this place did not appeal much. The garlic breads were not to our liking and appeared more home-made with no fancy and frills.

Following the not so good garlic bread experience, we thought of walking over to dominoes but decided against it and ordered below pizzas.

• Tabasco
• Nawabi

This place is a vegetarian only offering which was a little surprising but we did not complain and were pleasantly surprised. All the pizza ordered were large (11 inches only).

Pricing point is not too high as each Large pizza will cost Rs 270 only. Looking at our order I think we paid around Rs 1200 for 5 people which appeared reasonable when compared to other pizza outlets.

I would recommend you to go there only for Pizza. Look at their menu for other offerings like Pasta and let me know as a comment here.

Bengaluru boasts of a lane dedicated to street food that can bowl you over with its variety and taste.

Must be wondering what an unusual title for a food section? The title resonates with my pang for street food and its discovery in the southern state of India. My previous statement is anything but racist – it just means to highlight the fact that if you have tasted food in Delhi, street food in particular, you go about looking for that taste in every corner of the earth. Call it the ‘Dilli syndrome’ because you will never seem to find that gourmet bliss anywhere else earth.

However, my visit to south Bangaluru’s VV Puram introduced me to a lane that faintly looks like a long-lost cousin of Delhi’s Chandni Chowk and the food “somewhat” brought back memories of Delhi.

We entered through the VV Bakery side, waded our car through a swarm of people who looked as if ready to attack any fresh plate of food. The aroma was already a gastronomical treat as we headed towards the end of the “Khao Galli” in search of parking. We decided to start tasting food from the corner most shop.

The options available left us totally confused! There was sweet roti on offer, Chilli bajji (pakoras), capsicum bonda, mouth-watering dosas, paddus or the round non-fried pakoras, akki roti, bread pakoras, soft idlis etc. However, it was the sight of pav bhaji that just got me excited! And it was a treat in itself! I would have indulged in a second serving but for the want of space in my stomach to taste other delicacies as well!

This place offers scrumptious food at a decent price and a group of four can stuff themselves to the brim in just about rs 500! Almost every dish is in the range of Rs 15-35. You can enjoy Indianised Chinese food for a little more than Rs 50 but we never got to that! China can wait, who cares for it when your fingers are deep immersed in the butter and sweetness of your own indigenous dishes? We did not give much footage to the hawkers selling American corn either – just to be just!

To satisfy our sweet tooth, we indulged in multiple servings of small round ras malai. It would be an understatement to say that it was out of the world! For a few moments, Khao Galli does transport you to the by-lanes of Old Delhi just to be brought back when you yearn for more and start missing hot jalebi dipped in milk, the gol gappe of Delhi, the deep fried gobhi paranthas, chole bathure and what not!

But as they say, never complain! We did get the best out of the evening and discovered the best place in Bangalore to have street food. A word of caution – make sure you reach the place by 6:30 or latest by 7:00, else the lip-smacking dishes are just washed off the stalls! You can stay there till 10:300-11:00 or till stocks last! Of course, as much as humans, even animals are attracted to the aroma, just watch out for them.

Fresc Co at Vasant Kunj

Soon it will be that weather when Sundays start translating into long, lazy brunches. And one such place is Fresco. It serves Mediterranean/Italian cuisine.

It is a nice fresh ambience with white walls, couches with turquoise blue and green cushions blue wood windows. And a cheerful outdoor area, where you can sit and watch the shoppers’ dwell in their latest acquisitions.

And a brunch buffet that makes you temporarily amnesiac about your diet. Abundant salads and appetizers – not just your regular Caesar’s salad-meets pasta-meets chocolate cake, this. My plate was loaded with an awesome Greek salad with ample feta, a grilled Mediterranean salad, lemony hummus with crisp pita and cheese mini toasts (and that’s just half the appetizers). And oh, the live grills! Paneer and olive barbeque, chicken souvlaki (that Greek twist to chicken tikka) et al! You can have healthy food without feeling guilty. Apart from that they have the pasta and pizza section, from where I plucked a penne arabiatta that glistened with fresh tomato sauce, and slivers of grilled vegetables, and the biggest, cheesiest thin-crust pepperoni pizza. The range is simply mind-blowing and you might run out of belly space before you manage to try out all the items.

They have a wide variety of wines and mock tails. The service is par excellence even though it is a buffet and the freshness of the food, exemplary.

You just can’t miss the desserts attractively placed in little shot-glasses and mini-mugs. The mousse, chocolate cake slices, Tiramisu…my mouth waters as I write this!

FresCo, has a few branches…Ambience Mall, Gurgaon, Vasant Kunj (which I don’t quite like – I have been to all 3 branches) and there is one in CP. Buffet priced at Rs. 425 plus taxes, per person. The Sunday buffet is priced at 800+Taxes.

A grand luxury cruise liner on its maiden ill-fated voyage from Queenstown to New York. The movie first hit the big screens in 1997 which was a directorial, cinematography marvel and still is a fine piece of work. It reflects the passion of James Cameroon for shipwreck and his creatively perfectionist eye.

Titanic movie 3D

The 2D version released 14 years back tried to showcase the absolute marvel of RMS Titanic in terms of luxury and aura. The ship is projected as the center of attraction and the budding of love story across 2 individuals from different social levels of society.

The 3D version adds a lot more magic to the attractive direction. The movie has been digitally converted into 3D rather than being shot re-shot. After the blockbuster success of avatar, James Cameroon seems to have brought alive Titanic once again to big screens. The technical editing team has done a fantastic job in converting the movie into a life-like experience on-screen.

The acting from Leonardo Di Caprio and Kate Winslet also adds magic to the whole screen presence of the majestic ship in background where even the tiniest of details have been kept into mind and executed with a perfectionist’s eye. The variety of energies captured from the passengers of Third class on deck to those on First class is quite amazing to watch.

It is difficult to see the ship hitting an iceberg and sinking it’s “unsinkable” status. The luxury of space, furniture, rooms, cutlery being destroyed as the ship goes down with every passing minute after iceberg hit is quite engaging and keeps the audience engrossed. The 3D effect kicks into action when there are close up shots of people, landscape with ship, piston chambers where one can easily see the dept on the screen.

Overall a good movie to watch only on the big screen even if you decide to give the 3D version a skip. If you have not watched the 2D version, do not miss it this time.

On a different note, nature shows its might to sink the “unsinkable” and the stature of humans in front of it. Also at times of need, the barriers of society, race and color do not mean anything where all humans are equal.

APPEAL:

Great Indian Bustard

Photographers, please be careful when capturing the shots and moments of critically endangered Great Indian Bustard. The forest department has restricted the movement of people in the Naliya grasslands, Kutch district.

This move is an attempt to conserve this species from extinction. Un-ethical ways of photographing these birds in their habitat seems to have led to this restriction. Some times people get over enthusiastic of seeing something which has been declared critically endangered.

The birds breeding season spans from April to October.

This guidance of restricted movement is part of Great Indian Bustard Recovery Programme from Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) through the Deputy conservator of forests, Kutch (West) division, P A Vihol.

Any person found violating the guidelines shall be prosecuted under the Wildlife Protection Act 1972. This is a deterrent for people (including photographers) to leave the birds alone specially during their nesting/breeding time.

Lets hope, with some less selfishness, that we can see this heavy bird found only in the sub-continental region remove the endangered tag from it.

What a Kahaani! Vidya (aka Bidya) has done a fab job in this two- hour movie. I am all praises for her acting that has taken the movie to great heights. Though not a very big fan of her, she has done a commendable job in movies like “Bhool Bhulaiya”, “Pa”and more recently,  “The Dirty Picture”.

Kahaani movie review

The movie begins with a terrorist attack in the Kolkata metro train where hundreds of innocent people are killed. In the next frame we have an ordinary looking pregnant woman, Vidya Venkatesan Bagchi, who has come to India from London in search of her husband who came to Kolkatta on a two-week assignment. She had lost all contact with him for a week now.

The suspicion starts when the name of her husband is not to be found in any of the records – be it the immigration records, the flight details, the small lodge where he stayed and the worst of all, his company records also had no mention of him.

The HR head of the company in Kolkata tries to recollect him but identifies him as Milan Damji -DM who brings a twist to the movie and keeps us glued to the screen and on the edge throughout the movie.

The first half of the movie slowly builds up the intensity and trust me the incident that leads to the intermission will leave you asking for more. The intensity keeps increasing and the story keeps weaving. There are no dance-around-the-trees sequences to increase the length of movie beyond two-hours of meat. The film has been shot very well with a seemingly low budget but has been executed really well.

What is the highlight if you look from the cinematographer’s eye is that the camera follows the characters and the characters are not restricted by space to perform. And hence, adds to the suspense as it seems as if even the camera does not know what the character is going to do next!

Kahani is a crowd puller despite the “no-star” except Vidya tag attached to it. The story is engaging enough and the chaos at the locale adds to the mystery. As far as Vidya is concerned, we can pronounce her as a true actor as she has been able to erase off all memories of “Silk of The Dirty Picture” from our minds – an actor succeeds when she/he is a character and not an actor!

The climax if something totally unexpected and I will let you experience it on the big screen yourself.  I strongly recommend this movie as I was too busy with the gripping story to find any loopholes in the script.

The official actual count has been released as 1636.There are 39 Tiger reserves in India and about 30% of the tiger population is outside this territory.

1. The southern state of Karnataka shows the maximum rise in Tigers with the figure at 320. Tiger enthusiasts, please head to the state of Karnataka and get ready for a  visual treat!
2. Total of 550 tigers were captured via the camera traps

I am number four

John is an extra terrestrial human like creature living a nomadic life hiding his true identity. He is amongst a series of countable people alive from a different planet. They are being slowly killed one by one and he is the fourth in series. Unknown of the others, he is guarded by a person whom the world knows as his father. He is the guardian angel for John from the race trying to eliminate the existence of his species.

Running away to save himself and his race, he reaches the city of Ohio as a student in the college meeting up with a female photographer and grows close to her. He is always under strict observation in college with a “check” call every hour with absolute control to not expose his super powers. The city of Ohio turns into a battlefield where he is identified by the enemies.

A not so engaging experience with the fighting and super fast run chases. I felt the camera work could have been done better in cases where motion was involved as it resulted in strained eyes. The effects were good on occasions like the breathing through the alien like organs near nose for super senses. It ends unlike a melodramatic sequence where he takes off to a new destination with a newly found friend and number 6 in the series of race.

If you have some time at hand and have nothing to do, it is a good watch with not much thinking with high intensity. The camera work is nice with the landscape shots with vast expanse of green grasslands. At times there are interesting surprises around to add some spice to the movie and keep the audience engrossed.

The forensic reports are out and the relocated Tiger from Ranthambore was allegedly poisoned by one of the common insecticide used by farmers in their fields.

This is one big blow to all efforts to bring back tigers to its den which were supposedly poached to extinction from this Tiger reserve. The cat was re-located from Ranthambore in 2008.

Bandhavgarh houses the maximum number of Tigers per density in Asia region. A tiger needs a minimum area of 10sq km under its territory to remain naturally. The Bandhavgarh tiger zone has an average density of just 3sq km which gives an idea of how many tigers are concentrated in this reserve.

Even after such high densities, sighting them is not easy as they prefer to stay within forest cover and driving off-roads is an offense. Some of the moments of the trip captured are showcased below:

Fun thrilled exciting moments watching the striped animals walk infront with full grandeur and attitude.

I was lucky to sight 5 tigers in the wild. They are animals which are majestic to look at and wild in nature.

It is humans who are desperately trying to get on top of the food chain and replace them. Get to sense my friends and respect the place we have been allotted.
